Eventually you just get used to working for twenty minutes on something and then being completely willing to delete it because you know its crap. In terms of actually writing, not much style beyond I usually have to write 5 sets to get the one I'm looking for, so it can be somewhat time consuming. I then spend lots of time comparing my count sheet to what the guard designer(s) are wanting to do to make sure I stage the guard well with the band. A count sheet has the breakdown of sets (measures 1-4 will be set 2, measure 5 will be set 3, etc.), a description of what is happening musically, and a thought about what sort of design I want. Well before I ever have any numbers, though, I make a count sheet for every piece of music. It's then a battle of me writing at night more than the kids can set in a day. but if you think about, the number of kids that are going to be in the band changes several times over the course of camp, so it's really no use starting until the 2nd week. A lot of students wonder why the drill isn't designed well before they get to camp. Yeah, having accurate numbers are important.
